Productivity theatre is soo rooted in our work culture that I feel guilty fixing it.
Things I've been experimenting with lately:
Dedicated weekly time for DM replies (vs immediate replies)
No meetings if it doesn't require an actual meeting
Working uninterrupted on one big task for a full day rather than task switching
Taking a longer break in the afternoon to walk and get some sun, and then finish my work later
Having dedicated days for meetings (vs at anytime of the week)
Phone on do not disturb 24/7 except family
Opening mailbox 3 times a day, notifications only for critical services failures
Saying no to distractions and liberate more time to build products
I've long aspired to work this way, and only recently discovered Jason Fried concept a "calm company". Can't be thankful enough!
We often talk about AI to fix productivity, not enough on broken habits we normalized
